The Overworld
The Overworld is the dimension you spawn in. It holds every surface biome, the cave biomes added in 1.18, and most of the structures in the game.

How the Overworld generates
Since 1.18 the Overworld picks biomes from six climate noise values — temperature, humidity, continentalness, erosion, weirdness and depth — sampled in three dimensions. Before 1.18 biomes came from a stack of scaling and mutation layers, which is why 1.17 and 1.18 worlds of the same seed look completely different.
- World border at ±29,999,984 blocks
- Slime chunks are determined by seed and chunk coordinates only
- Strongholds are arranged in eight concentric rings around the origin
Structures
- Village — Villages are the most common inhabited structure. They generate in plains, desert, savanna, taiga, snowy and (since 1.19) meadow biomes, and their building style follows the biome underneath them.
- Ocean Monument — Ocean monuments are guarded by elder guardians and contain sponge rooms and eight blocks of gold.
- Woodland Mansion — Woodland mansions are the rarest surface structure and the only place vindicators, evokers and totems of undying generate naturally.
- Ancient City — Ancient cities generate deep underground in the deep dark, around Y -52, and are the only source of the swift sneak enchantment.
- Trial Chamber — Trial chambers are copper-and-tuff dungeons with trial spawners, vaults and ominous vaults, generating between Y -40 and Y 0.
- Stronghold — Strongholds contain the end portal. Since 1.9 a world holds 128 strongholds arranged in eight concentric rings around the world origin.
