Coordinate converter

Convert a Minecraft position between block, chunk and region coordinates, and between the Overworld and the Nether.

How Minecraft coordinates work

Block coordinates are what the F3 debug screen shows. A chunk covers 16×16 blocks, so chunk coordinates are the block coordinates divided by sixteen and rounded down — including for negative numbers, which is why -1 is in chunk -1, not chunk 0.

Region files cover 32×32 chunks, or 512×512 blocks, and are stored in your world save as r.X.Z.mca. Knowing the region file is useful when backing up or trimming a world.

Overworld and Nether

The Nether is compressed 8:1 horizontally. An Overworld position of 1,600, -800 corresponds to 200, -100 in the Nether. Y is not scaled. Building a Nether tunnel between two portals at the correct linked coordinates is the fastest travel in the game.

Using coordinates in game

With cheats enabled, /tp @s x ~ z moves you to a position while keeping your current height. Without cheats, press F3 and walk until the X and Z values match. Coordinates from the seed map are block coordinates and can be used directly.
