The Nether

The Nether is a compressed dimension used for fast travel and for resources that do not exist in the Overworld: netherite, blaze rods, nether wart and ancient debris.

Dimension facts

Identifier
minecraft:nether
Height range
0 to 256, with a bedrock ceiling at 128
Coordinate ratio
1:8 — one Nether block equals eight Overworld blocks

How the Nether generates

Since 1.16 the Nether selects between five biomes using climate noise, the same idea the Overworld adopted in 1.18. Fortresses and bastion remnants share a single placement grid, so a region contains one or the other.

  • Coordinates are one eighth of the matching Overworld position
  • Bastions never generate in basalt deltas
  • Nether fossils generate only in soul sand valleys

Structures

  • Nether Fortress — Nether fortresses are the only place blazes and wither skeletons spawn naturally, and the only survival source of nether wart.
  • Bastion Remnant — Bastion remnants are piglin strongholds containing gold blocks, netherite upgrade templates and pigstep music discs.
  • Nether Fossil — Nether fossils are bone block skeletons that generate in soul sand valleys.
  • Nether Ruined Portal — Nether ruined portals are denser than their overworld counterparts and a reliable early obsidian source.
