What is a Minecraft seed?

A seed is the 64-bit number Minecraft uses to generate a world. World generation is deterministic, so the same seed with the same edition and version always produces the same terrain, biomes and structure positions.

Can I use text as a seed?

Yes. Minecraft converts non-numeric text to a number with Java string hashing. Typing "glacier" produces the seed 108181935. This site performs the same conversion, so you can enter either form.

How do I find the seed of my world?

Run /seed in chat in singleplayer, or ask a server operator to run it. You can also read it from level.dat in the world save with an NBT editor.

Does this work for Bedrock Edition?

No. Bedrock uses a different world generation implementation, so a Java map of the same seed would not match. MineSeedMap supports Java Edition only rather than showing results that would be wrong.

Why does the map show a structure that is not in my world?

Minecraft picks a candidate position on a region grid, then checks whether the biome and terrain there are suitable. Candidate positions are exact arithmetic; the biome check needs the full generation engine. When that engine is unavailable, markers are labelled as candidates.

Why does the map not match my world at all?

The most common cause is the wrong version. Structure spacing and biome generation changed between releases — 1.18 in particular changed the Overworld completely. Select the version the world was created in, not the version you are playing now.

Are my seeds uploaded anywhere?

No. Generation runs in your browser in a background worker. Seeds appear in the page URL so you can share a link, but nothing is sent to a server for processing.

What are slime chunks?

Slime chunks are chunks where slimes spawn below Y 40 regardless of biome. They depend only on the world seed and the chunk coordinates, so they can be computed exactly without any biome data.

Why can I not see biome colours?

Biome rendering requires the WebAssembly build of the generation engine. If a deployment does not include it, the map shows the chunk and region grid with exact structure candidates instead, and says so on screen.

Does the map show chest loot?

Accepted Answer

No. Loot is rolled the first time a chest is opened in game, not during world generation, so it cannot be predicted from the seed alone.
